Pet Ultrasonography
One of our main goals at Courtyard Animal Hospital is to provide state-of-the-art medicine and diagnostic testing for our patients. In recent times there have been incredible advancements in the veterinary field. Diagnostic ultrasound is one of these innovations that has been shown to be an effective tool. We are happy to offer ultrasound services through a traveling ultrasonographer as a way to give our patients a higher standard of care. Ultrasonography uses no radiation, in contrast to various other imaging procedures like x-rays. Instead, ultrasonography makes a picture of what is inside your pet’s body using high-frequency sound (ultrasound) waves. Many common disorders can be detected and assessed painlessly and without any invasiveness using ultrasonography.
Ultrasound waves are produced by an ultrasound machine. A tiny probe attached to the machine is placed against your pet’s skin. The probe emits painless ultrasound waves that are reflected off of the organs and other structures before returning to a sensor inside the ultrasound machine. These reflected “echoes” are collected by the ultrasonic apparatus, which then produces images that may be seen on a screen. Abdominal organs such as the liver, spleen, gallbladder, and kidneys can be clearly seen in ultrasound imaging. It can be used to diagnose and stage (define the seriousness of) some cancers.

We also offer a special type of ultrasound called an echocardiogram. This is an ultrasound of the heart. Once the echo images are obtained, they are evaluated by a cardiologist, who determines if the cardiac disease is present and if medication is needed for treatment.
